Through the assistance the VFW’s Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarships provide, active-duty U.S. service members and veterans are able to pursue the education and training they need to begin the next chapter of their lives. To see how our program is making an impact, read the stories of five of our recipients below.
“I love being in school and gaining knowledge to better articulate my thoughts and experiences in language that civilians can understand as well as appreciate […] This award will allow me to continue pursuing my education without added debt. I live to serve and pay forward in support of my local community, state, and country. I know from personal experience that freedom is not free, and I am fighting for veterans and their families to obtain recognition for his or her service to our great land. With this scholarship award, I will be able to gain a better foothold to serve my comrades and citizens.”
“As a veteran it means more than words can describe to feel the support of a grateful nation. After being discharged from the Marines, I did not know what life had in store for me and I was forced to reassess all of my dreams. After several months I fixed my sights on becoming an attorney with hopes that I could help my local community and contribute once more to my country […] Thank you just doesn't seem to be enough to express my gratitude, but it is all I have at this time. So, from the bottom of my heart thank you for helping me to get one step closer to making my dreams a reality!”
“I recently was awarded and accepted a $3,500.00 scholarship to earn my master’s degree in social work […] Now, with the aid of this scholarship, I can help other returning service members with their mental health needs […] I remember coming home from Iraq in the summer of 2007, to the support of my community, but this just shows how, nationally, those of us who signed the dotted line to keep America safe are continuously being supported. America and organizations like [Sport Clips and the VFW] give me hope that we will always be looked upon as defenders of this great nation and respected for our duty.”
“I am writing you today to express my sincere gratitude in receiving your VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship […] I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to further my education mostly because I look forward to using what I have learned in school to help my fellow veterans. It warms my heart and fires my spirit to continue to work toward a degree that I know I will put to good use. I look forward to telling my friends and family about what Sport Clips and the Veterans of Foreign Wars have done for me and many other former service members in their quest to achieve higher education.”
“Hello, my name is Courtney, and I come from the Navajo Nation which is in Northern Arizona […] We did not have much growing up; both my parents worked to provide for us, although we lived with my grandparents […] I am currently taking college classes at Paradise Valley Community College to become an environmental engineer. Along the way, I also became a mother to a beautiful baby girl who I love with everything I am […] Upon my graduation from [The University of Arizona] I plan on returning to my home, the Navajo Nation, to work with my people, and others, to preserve and protect our homeland and its natural resources […] This support will not go unappreciated; my little family thanks you as well.”
