VFW, Sport Clips Award Nearly $750,000 to Student Veterans

More than 160 student vets were awarded a VFW Help A Hero Scholarship for the 2023 fall semester

KANSAS CITY, MO

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is proud to announce 162 service members and veterans were selected as recipients of the VFW’s “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship” for the upcoming 2023 fall semester. The student veterans will collectively receive nearly $750,000 in post-secondary scholarships to help them achieve their academic goals while lessening their student loan burden.

Now in its 10th year, the Help A Hero Scholarship was established through a strong relationship with Sport Clips Haircuts to help ease the financial burden service members and veterans face when achieving their post-secondary educational goals.

“With the costs of college tuition rising year after year, student veterans utilizing GI Bill benefits are often faced with their education benefits running out before they can achieve their degree and graduate,” said VFW National Commander Duane Sarmiento. “The VFW is incredibly proud of the assistance and relief that this scholarship, and our work with Sport Clips, is able to provide to our nation’s service members and veterans.”

“We are proud that our Help A Hero Scholarship program has partnered with the VFW Foundation since 2013 to award over 2,700 scholarships to veterans making the transition from military to civilian careers,” said Gordon Logan, Air Force veteran, VFW Life member, and founder and chairman of Sport Clips. “The Help A Hero Scholarship is a powerful way for us to say thank you to those who served by ensuring recipients have the financial resources they need to complete their education while setting them up for success in their chosen careers after the military.”

With today’s announcement, the Help A Hero Scholarship program has now awarded more than $12.3 million in scholarships to more than 2,720 student veterans. The Help A Hero Scholarship is funded solely through donations from generous Sport Clips team members, clients, individual supporters and corporate sponsors. Applications for the fall 2024 semester are currently being accepted. To find out more on the Help A Hero scholarship or to apply, visit vfw.org/Scholarship.
